PENSIONERS PENALISED FOR SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT PDF Print E-mail

The FREE AUSTRALIA PARTY calls on Mike Rann to speak out against the recent farcical Federal Labor policy of punishing pensioners seeking to do the right thing by the environment in installing solar panels to the rooves of their houses.  Under a Rudd policy of clawing back money from those on Centrelink payments their pensions are being cut to the amount they may receive for helping to save the environment.

A spokeswoman for the office of Families Minister Jenny Macklin confirmed the clawback. "If a pensioner sells power back to the grid and receives cash payments or a rebate on their power bill that is counted as income for social security purposes."

The FREE AUSTRALIA PARTY considers that individuals responding to government environment initiatives ought to be rewarded for doing so by being permitted to keep the money they earn from generating and selling excess electricity back to the grid, instead of having their pension payments deducted.

This recent policy by Labor begs the question of why was it not made clear to those taking up the solar panel rebate scheme at its inception that any social security payments received would be reduced due to excess electricity sold back to the grid being viewed as an “income”.
